Gavigangadeshwara Temple

Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is also known Gavipuram Cave Temple, an example of Indian rock-cut architecture,. It is located in Bangalore. Temple is famous for its stone discs and exact planning allowing SUN to shine on the shrine in certain time of year.

The ancient temple was built around 9th century and was cut out single large block of stone. The main deity here is Lord Shiva. The temple also houses rare idols of Agni, the God of fire,  idol Agnimurthi, it has two heads, seven hands and three legs( the deities worshiping this idol believe it will cure all eye defects)

               Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is one of the famous Shiva temple in Bangalore, thousands of devotees visit this temple on all auspicious days. Makara sankranthi  is a special day when sun rays pass through the horns of Nandi and fall on Shivlinga for one hour every year. This illumination happens a two times in year from 13 to 16 January in late afternoons and from 26 November to 2 December. Earlier drawings showed that temple had less structure compared to this day.

The temple shrine is a protected monument under the Karnataka Ancient and Historical Monuments, and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1961.





Bus routes:
Route no: 35  Kempegowda Bus Station  to  Gavigangadhara Temple(OPPOSITE OF HOPCOMS)

Route no 35 is the only direct bus, other buses are available from Ramakrishna Ashram where you will find lot of buses (frequent buses are available from Majestic, Market and all major stations to reach ). It takes around 35 min to reach the places.
